SEO - Do-It-Yourself
Ranking high in Google’s search results can have a phenomenal impact on the success of your business. You can either engage the expertise of a Search Engine Optimisation company or, if you have the time, make some changes to your website yourself.
Step 1: Keyword Research
What keywords do you think your customers would type in to search for your products or services? A keyword can be one word (e.g., “optimization”), but multiple keywords or phrases are usually preferred because they are more specific and likely to match what your customers are looking for (e.g., “Search Engine Optimisation company in India”).
Write down as many as you can think of. Brainstorm with your team and consider geographical phrases if they are relevant. Aim to make a list of 20-30 keyword phrases.
Choose two keyword phrases that are the most relevant to your business but are not overly competitive. It's a good idea to have 2-3 words in each phrase (e.g., “wedding catering services”).
Once you’ve selected your best keyword phrases, the next step is to improve your home page.
Step 2: Web Copy
Web copy refers to all the text on your website. Your keyword phrases need to be placed strategically to convince Google that your content is highly relevant to those keywords, while also being readable for customers.
Here’s how to increase each keyword’s prominence:
- Place your keywords in headings, preferably at the beginning.
- Include keywords towards the top of the page.
- Bold or italicize keywords where appropriate.
- Instead of using generic links, reword them to include your keywords (e.g., "Read more about our SEO copywriting services").
Include these keywords in your HTML “title tag” as well. Add new content like detailed descriptions of your offerings, FAQs, and informative articles to enhance relevance.
Remember, search engines read text, not images, so avoid embedding words in images.
Step 3: Linking
Each link from another website to yours is considered a vote of popularity and improves your rankings. Quality matters more than quantity, so focus on relevant and reputable sites.
Brainstorm relevant websites that could link to you and reach out to them explaining the benefits of linking to your site.
How do I monitor my results?
Monitor your rankings by searching your keywords and checking your Google Search Console reports to see how visitors find your site. Tools like Moz, Ahrefs, or Ubersuggest can provide deeper insights.
Repeat this process for each page, updating content regularly and increasing backlinks. Record your customer inquiries to measure success.
Remember, if you measure it, you can improve it.
